Over the August Long Weekend, the eight edition of the Dancing With The Dinosaurs Indigenous Festival was held at the Badlands Community Facility.
Both Saturday and Sunday were filled with music, dancing, food, and so much more, allowing those in our community to immerse themselves in the Indigenous cultures. As such in life, every good thing must come to an end and this year was the final edition of the Dancing With The Dinosaurs Festival. Lynn Fabrick, organizer for the event, shares that this year’s event was fantastic. “It was amazing. It was beyond amazing. The turnout, the overall event, was non stop.”
With this year’s festival being the final one, Fabrick was pleased that she got to enjoy the event for really the first time. “I had the opportunity to enjoy it myself for the first time, be a spectator as well. To be able to thank everyone, participate in some of the dances, and then to acknowledge that this was our last one, really made it happen, the right time.”
The Indigenous Festival is done but many of the other events organized by Fabrick in our community, like the National Day For Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Red Dress Day, those type of things will continue. To have the door close on this specific event, Fabrick feels that it is time. “In our culture, we ask for guidance so I asked for guidance. With having my family, and being able to spend more time with them, and reflect, that was the decision we made.”
Fabrick is also very proud on how the event developed over the years and how the community immersed themselves in the culture. “I really do feel like the community embraced it. There is so much support from all levels, that it was nice to go out with that high feeling of accomplishment, but also everyone embracing it. It will always be close to me and something that I will treasure for ever.”
Fabrick would like to thank all the businesses that supported the event, along with support from the local, provincial, federal governments, the Indigenous people from our area, including those from Siksika Nation, all of the performers, and of course all that attended the event over the past years.
