The congregation at Grace Lutheran Church in Drumheller had a very busy couple of weeks with two of their key summer programs.
The church held their annual vacation bible school (VBS) and this year they had a theme of vacation bible school and sports camp. It is such a popular event that they had the camp full back at the end of May. They had 40 kids participate. The camp was led by youth of the church, with assistance of some friends from Bethel Lutheran Church in Sherwood Park, along with some adult helpers.
Along with religious songs and teachings, kids were paying soccer, basketball, football, and wrapped up the week with some bouncy castle fun.
This was the second year for Grace Lutheran to run the VBS / Sports Camp program and it turned out to be successful once again.
Later in the week they had their annual Shoes For School campaign helping young students in the Drumheller area get a pair of new shoes before they head to school. According to Lynn Hemming with Grace Lutheran Church, they’ve ran this program for 12 years and love to see the smiles from the kids. “We love to see the smiles on the kids faces when they get their new pair of shoes, many of them are just beaming. We know it is a very expensive time of year for families, and of course costs are going up for everything. We’re just happy that we can help a little bit.”
This year the program was able to help 63 children with new shoes for their upcoming school year. Much of the funding comes from those that attend Grace Lutheran, with some additional community partners. Over 500 pairs of shoes have been given out in the past 12 years.
