For years, the Province of Alberta has offered a number of different licence plates for drivers to show their support to their favourite hockey team, or to support the troops, now they can show their support for wildlife conservation in the province.
Alberta’s government is launching its first conservation-focused specialty licence plate. Proceeds from sales of the new plate will be directed to the Alberta Conservation Association, a trusted organization with a long history of stewardship, habitat restoration, wildlife research and support for sustainable outdoor activities across Alberta.
Every purchase helps fund critical, on-the-ground work, from restoring habitats and monitoring wildlife to advancing research and supporting community-driven conservation programs across Alberta.
“Alberta’s wildlife and wild places are a source of pride for people across our province,” shares Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks. “This licence plate gives Albertans an innovative, simple and visible way to support conservation while celebrating one of our most iconic species. Every plate sold helps protect habitats and keeps our fish and wildlife populations healthy for future generations.”
The plate features an iconic painting of two of Alberta’s famous bighorn sheep with Mount Lougheed in the background. The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep is Alberta’s provincial mammal and one of the province’s most recognizable and celebrated species. Artwork for the plate is based on a commissioned piece by Alberta artist Desmond McCaffrey.
By choosing this specialty plate, drivers can proudly contribute to safeguarding Alberta’s diverse ecosystems and the species that call them home. With each plate purchased, Albertans are helping ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife that define the province.
Quick Facts:
- The cost of the specialty plate is $75, plus a $15 registry agent fee, and standard vehicle registration fees apply.
- The Alberta Conservation Association will receive $55 in funding for every plate sold.
- The licence plate will be available for purchase starting on Sept. 1 on Alberta.ca and in local registries.
