Your Drumheller Dragons had a very busy start to their exhibition season with three games in three days over the Labour Day Long Weekend.
It all started on the road with a game in Olds against the Grizzlys on Friday night. Drumheller came out firing as they were able to outshoot Olds 13-4 in the first period and tally three goals, from Lauchlan Kozicky, Allen Sherpa, and Colter Playfair, to lead 3-0 after one period.
The Grizzlys would narrow the lead early in the second, with a goal by Sutton Hodgetts, but then the Dragons powerplay would go to work. Three powerplay goals in a row by Nicholas Binner, Dominic Seminoff, and Harrison Boldt, to increase the lead to 6-1. Lauchlan Kozicky would tally his second of the game with just over eight minutes left in the period to make it 7-1. Olds would get one more before the end of the second period with a powerplay goal of their own by Emery Medicine Shield, making it 7-2.
The Grizzlys would score early in the third to make it 7-3 Dragons but Drumheller would counter with Colter Playfair scoring his second of the game, making the final 8-3 Drumheller.
Saturday, the Calgary Canucks would come to Drumheller to face the Dragons. Drumheller would get on the board first in the first period with Dominic Seminoff scoring his second of the preseason to give the Dragons the 1-0 lead after one.
In the second, veteran Dragons defender Tristan Payne would score from the left point to increase the lead for Drumheller 2-0. Calgary would answer with Brady Cheyne cutting the deficit to 2-1 Dragons. Drumheller would add one in the third, with Luca Dufour scoring his first of the exhibition season, making it 3-1 Dragons. Cue the comeback for Calgary with four goals in the third to take the 5-3 lead. Drumheller would add one more with five seconds left in the game, by Wyatt Yakimchuk, to cut the deficit to 5-4 but would end up dropping the game.
Sunday would be a rematch from Friday as the Olds Grizzlys paid a visit to the Memorial Arena.
It would be an even battle between the two rivals. Drumheller would open the scoring with a powerplay goal by Nick McLennan early in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. With just over three minutes left in the first, Nathan Ivey for Drumheller would increase the lead to 2-0.
The Grizzlys would get one back on the powerplay early in the second period, with a goal by Nikita Kulikov. With just over four minutes remaining in the period, Dominic Seminoff would score his third goal in three games, on the man-advantage, to make it 3-1 Dragons. Just over a minute later, Olds would make it 3-2 Drumheller, with a goal by veteran Finn Bagley.
That would be it for the scoring and the Dragons would take the hard fought win 3-2. Drumheller is back at it on Wednesday as the Camrose Kodiaks come to town for a mid-week tilt at the Memorial Arena. Game time on Wednesday night is at 7 PM.
