Our Drumheller Dragons started off their season on the road this past weekend with games in Camrose and Calgary.
Friday night, rivalries were renewed with the Camrose Kodiaks at the Camrose Recreation Centre. These two teams met in the first round of the playoffs last season and that instantly ramped up the competition between the two veteran teams. The Kodiaks would open the scoring at 6:32 with Tomas Figura making it 1-0 Camrose. The Dragons would tie the game with rookie Dominic Seminoff passing it to himself off the glass and scoring his first of the year with 7:12 left in the period. The first would end 1-1.
In the second, Camrose would regain the lead at 8:20 with a goal by Adrien Fox. The Dragons would again tie the game with veteran Jacob Goudreau scoring at 11:26, from Nick McLennan and Paxton Cabana. Only 27 seconds later, the Kodiaks would again take the lead, on a goal by Tyson Murray, making it 3-2 Camrose after two periods.
The Dragons would tie the game 3-3, early in the third, with Noa Halat scoring, assisted by Lauchlan Kozicky and Jacob Goudreau. The game would remain tied and need overtime. Only 1:31 in, Camrose would score the game winner and hand the Dragons the overtime loss.
Saturday, the Dragons would meet up with another rival on the road in Calgary, facing the Canucks. This game would seem more like a game from the 80’s with all the goals scored.
Lauchlan Kozicky would open the scoring for the Dragons at 10:02, assisted by Nick McLennan and Jacob Goudreau. The Canucks would tie the game on a goal by Nate Steinraths at 15:22. Only 24 seconds later, Dominic Seminoff would score his second of the early season, from Colter Playfair and Griffen Bruno. The Dragons would increase their lead to 3-1 with 1:02 left in the first, with Griffen Bruno scoring his first of his young career, from Dominic Seminoff and Paxton Cabana.
Calgary would capitalize on a powerplay in the second to cut the deficit to 3-2, with a goal by Nathaniel Danielson. Only eight second later, the Dragons would regain their two goal lead with another goal by a rookie, Grayson Boe, assisted by Bradley Gallo. Calgary would come back once again with 8:35 left in the second as Porter Rossi would score, making it 4-3 Drumheller. The Canucks would tie the game 4-4 on a pretty powerplay goal by Nicholas Anisomovicz with 3:12 left in the period.
Early in the third, Anisimovicz would score his second of the game for the Canucks, giving them their first lead of the game, 5-4. The Dragons would tie things up 5-5 with Bradley Gallo scoring his first of the year, from Grayson Boe and Roan Greschuk. Drumheller would score on the powerplay with Dominic Seminoff scoring his second of the game (3), assisted by Lauchlan Kozicky and Paxton Cabanna at 10:32. Calgary would tie the affair once again with their own powerplay goal at 15:21 by Callum McSherry. Drumheller would take a questionable too many men on the ice penalty with 1:30 left and then a tripping minor with just under 40 seconds left in the game, giving Calgary the five-on-three man advantage. With only 30 seconds left in the game. Callum McSherry scored his second of the game, giving Calgary the 7-6 victory.
The Dragons will look to get in the win column in front of their home crowd twice this weekend. Friday night, the Dragons welcome the defending AJHL champs, the Canmore Eagles at 7 PM at the Memorial. Saturday, the Whitecourt Wolverines pay their first visit of the year to Drumheller, also at 7 PM.
