Farmers in Alberta finally got a decent stretch of harvest weather over the past week, and it shows.
The latest provincial crop report that came out on Friday afternoon, says harvest of major crops jumped 17 points over the past week to around 40 percent completed. The spring wheat harvest climbed 22 percent, barley was up 21, and canola advanced 11 points. The south is leading the way at 63 percent harvested, while central Alberta sits at 44 percent. Crop quality is also looking strong, with 90 percent of the canola grading number one, which is bang on the long term average.
There’s more good news. Provincial dryland yields are now estimated at 20 percent above the five year average. Producers say more dry weather would help keep combines rolling and get the rest of the crop in the bin before winter starts knocking on the door. It kind of felt like winter on Saturday.
