Although the temperatures on Saturday, October 10th were not ideal, the Drumheller Fire and Rescue hosted an open house at their main fire hall on Centre Street downtown.
The Fire Department had a number of their fire trucks on display, offering kids and adults alike the opportunity to check them out and take a ride around the block in one of the fire trucks. According to Drumheller Fire Chief Derian Rosario, the response by the community was great on Saturday. “It went absolutely amazing. I am very happy with the community support throughout the day. We probably had about 350 people come through the fire hall. The cold weather did not keep the people away.”
This year the focus for Fire Prevention Week was batteries, the risks in charging them and the proper disposal. Drumheller and District Solid Waste was on hand to educate the public about recycling batteries and having them there may have helped the numbers admits Rosario. “Nowadays, those batteries and how to dispose of them, and recycle them, is very much on people minds. Having Drumheller and District Solid Waste was great. The RCMP (who attended the event) is always great to have as well, being our partners in safe communities.”
Rosario feels that the education provided was beneficial this year and noted the public took advantage of the opportunity. “Between the national messages, being able to be on ‘Two Minutes On The Town’ (on boom and New Country), the open house, the few other events we did across the community, really think the message got out this year and it was great to see the community feedback.”
