I had the supreme honor of talking with Don Schmid, the drummer of the Northern Pikes.
Don Schmid, the Drummer of The Northern Pikes is such a fantastic human being.
We had a great conversation about what is up and coming for the Northern Pikes for the 2019 year. Many may remember the Pikes from the '80s and are still following them on their fantastic musical journey to this day. Some of their popular tunes are "She Ain't Pretty", "Teenland", "Things I Do For Money", and "Girl With a Problem", just to name a few.
The Northern Pikes have been together since January of 1984. It is their 35th anniversary this year. Don Schmid says "It's an amazing accomplishment in itself that we're still together after all this time".
With the release of their new album (they are working on the title as you read this), in the spring, all new songs, and a new sound, what a better way to celebrate 35 years of great music together.
The Northern Pikes recorded their new album in Calgary, Alberta, at the world-class Bell Performance Hall National Music Centre last February 2018, located above the historic, restored, "King Eddy Hotel". Don mentioned that the band says "It's like Disneyland for music". "A hall of fame of Canadian music right from the beginning of time".
The band visited the National Music Centre in November of 2017 and were in awe of the history of Canadian artists' memorabilia, such as Shania Twain, K.D. Lang, Buffy St. Marie, Anne Murray, and Gordon Lightfoot only to name a few. Also, on-site the Music Centre displays The Rolling Stones mobile recording studio where the Stones, Led Zepplin, Bob Marley, and Deep Purple recorded some of their albums. ("Smoke on the Water" was recorded in this mobile unit).
16 days in total were spent recording 10 brand new songs and I personally can't wait to hear what is going to be gracing my ears!!
Thank you so much, Don Schmid, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to chat with me. I wish you, Bryan Potvin, Jay Semko, and Kevin Kane all the best with the release of your new album and your Tour in 2019. Be safe in your travels and have a fantastic time with your true and new fans.
The Northern Pikes First Concert to debut their new album will be March 23rd, in Bragg Creek, Alberta, at the Bragg Creek Community Centre. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. For more information visit www.braggcreekperformingarts.com
