Twice in three years for a Drumheller area man with a penchant for tractor pulling.
Niel Bertsh entered his 1956 John Deere Model 80 in the Calgary Stampede Tractor Pull, trying to repeat the Class 5 championship he won in 2016. He did.
"It still feels like a pretty big deal to me," he confessed. "It feels good; it's not getting old yet, no."
So, how does one get into tractor pulling?
"We decided to restore our tractor and after we got it restored, it was like well, we should be doing something with it, so we started pulling," he responded.
On Monday night’s second go at the Saddledome, Bertsch registered a 180-foot pull, giving him an aggregate total of 285 feet, five inches. It was the only full pull of this year’s Class 5 competition.
"I got a red ribbon: I think it's supposed to be for the International (Harvester) guys," he joked. "The red kind of clashes with my tractor, but that's what they give so we'll take it."
Bertsh told 99.5 Drum FM after two wins in three years he's already looking forward to 2018.
He's also looking for the original John Deere Model 80 tractor he used to drive as a young boy.  The serial number is 8000771.
