Drumheller Dragons fans got a first taste of what the coming Alberta Junior Hockey League season might look like as the Orange and Black hosted the Olds Grizzlys in their pre-season home opener on Wednesday.
Joren Patenaud led the way with a pair of goals, including the winner, as the Dragons downed the visitors 5-2.
"A good first home game, we've got a new, revamped room, new lights in the building and a good first win," he summed up.
"I thought I played pretty good," Patenaud said after the game. "The second period (I had) too many turnovers, got a bit fatigued in the end too because we got down to three forward lines, but overall I was happy with my game."
While Patenaud led the goal scorers on Wednesday, he cautioned we perhaps shouldn't get too used to that.
"Typically I don't score goals, I'm normally passing it, but it's good to put some in the net," he stated. "We've got two big games against Brooks before we start the (regular) season so it's a good confidence builder, for sure."
The other Drumheller goal scorers were Josh Bishop, Brady Risk and Tyson Scott. Dane Dow played 30 minutes of shutout hockey in the Dragons net, while Hunter Virostek played the 2nd half of the game.
The Brooks Bandits come to the Memorial Arena on Friday for the first game of a home and home pre-season series, with the return match Sunday in Brooks.
The regular season begins on Friday, September 15 as the Dragons host the Camrose Kodiaks.
