Thursday night your Drumheller Dragons started the AJHL Playoffs against their first-round opponent, the Canmore Eagles. Drumheller won the season series five games to one but most of the games were close. Thursday's would be no different.
Canmore came out strong to start the first period and dominated play in the first ten minutes of the game. The Eagles had two goals waived off early, the first due to the puck being frozen and the whistle blew. The second was kicked into the goal. The first goal of the series would go to the Dragons as captain Markus Boguslavsky scored from Roc Truman. Drumheller would lead 1-0 after one.
The second period would see both teams have good chances but neither would score. Drumheller would give the Canmore Eagles three power-play opportunities but the Eagles could not capitalize. Drumheller would continue to lead after two periods, 1-0.
Canmore would tie the game in the third period when Quentin Ong would score short-handed at 8:24. The Eagles were quite disciplined in the game and the Dragons only had two power-play chances. The game would remain tied and would need overtime.
In the extra session, Canmore would get a chance early on a quick pass from behind the net by Alex Young to Owen Reith and he would snap the game-winner by Hunter Virostek. Final shots would be 25-24 in favour of the Eagles. With the win, the Eagles take a 1 game to none lead in the best of five series.
