A country musician from Standard has won a major songwriting competition.

Drew Gregory is living a truly country lifestyle; raising his family on the farm, writing and singing country music and putting the crop in just like every other farmer in the area this spring. That life is what inspires Drew Gregory to write songs.

"I just love writing and not all songs turn out to do anything,"explained Gregory. "You write and then you don't do much with them after that, so it's always pretty cool when something happens to one of your songs and someone else has success with it."

Gregory teamed up with Shae Dupuy and Mike Little to record the song "Wishing on You," which won them the Canadian Songwriting Competition in the country music category.

"It would have been a couple years ago now that we wrote this,"he stated. "She (Dupuy) was going across Canada and writing with a bunch of different people and I guess we were the people she chose for Calgary, so glad she did. She's a very talented young girl."

Dupuy, who hails from Ontario, included "Wishing on You" on her Brave EP, which was released last fall.

"She had the idea and we kind of took it and ran with it and it was a really cool song," said Gregory about their writing session. "Definitely a female song, but glad she put it on on her latest album."

Currently, Gregory is seeding with his Dad but is gearing up for a busy summer ahead, including stops in Hussar at Summer Daze on June 17 at the Airdrie Pro Rodeo on June 30.
