School is back in session for children around the region and so is the effort to keep them safe on the ride to and from school.

Cody Patton is a transport officer with Commercial Vehicle Inspection.

"We'll be going through all the school buses in the Drumheller area making sure they're mechanically fit to be on the roads and compliant with legislation and ensuring that the kids and the school bus drivers get there safely," he told 99.5 Drum FM.

Commercial Vehicle Inspection is responsible for making sure that all non passenger vehicles are safe to operate and Patton says it's really no different for school buses.

"We stop all the school buses after the kids are unloaded at their respective schools," he explained. "The main thing we're looking for is all of the safety features: the amber warning lights, the red warning lights, heaters, dome lights on the inside and all the emergency exits."

"Every vehicle has the same requirements dependent on whether it's air brake or hydraulic setup, emphasized Patton. "It's mainly just the safety features of the school buses, if you will, are held to a higher standard, and rightly so with the important passengers they have on board."

He added all motorists need to be attentive to school buses when drivers are loading and unloading students along their routes. Also, ensure you are travelling less than 30km/h when going through designated playground or school zones.
