Don't tell the members of the First Drumheller Scouts kids today don't know how to rough it.
Members of the local Scouts, Cubs and Beavers held a campout on the November 3 weekend at Dalum, just south of the valley.
"We were camping at the Dalum Community Hall," related Scouter Hawkeye, Valerie Given. "The Cubs and the Beavers slept in the Hall because they have to sleep inside this time of year. The Scouts, however, actually slept outside in the ball diamond area, in the snow."
"The Scouts actually sleep outside all year round: it's one of the most fun parts of Scouting at that age because they actually get to do far more things," explained Given. "We go through 'this is the kind of stuff that you need, this is how you stay warm,' so we kind of prep them so that they bring the right gear to stay warm overnight and that's what they did."
The local troop tries to hold one campout each season, which means despite a foot or more of snow this last time, that was not their winter camp.
"Obviously, it was kind of a winter camp because it snowed, but this was considered our fall camp," explained Given. "The winter camp will either be in December or, more likely, in January. They'll go out and be sleeping outside in their tents and doing all that stuff."
The Dalum campout will be remembered for one more thing: the Dalum Fire Department filled its tanker from the Hall and there was no running water in the morning. However, there was lots of snow outside, which they wound up melting so they could have breakfast and do their morning ablutions.
