"There were some concerning crime trends in Carbon and the community came together and decided to form a Citizens on Patrol," recalled Satff Sergeant Kevin Charles of the Drumheller RCMP. "That's been in place now for a few months and we've noticed since then that the crime has actually been reduced."
"We definitely want to give credit where credit is due and that's the kind of thing that we want to see," he continued. "There's been an increase in reports of suspicious persons and suspicious vehicles, but that comes in hand with having an active C-O-P. They're the eyes and the ears out there for us."

Citizens on Patrol members are volunteers who patrol their community and report anything suspicious to police. They do not actively engage potential suspects. Anyone interested in joining the program in Carbon or Drumheller is advised to contact the local RCMP detachment at 403-823-7590.

Local crime fighting has also received a boost from the Alberta Government, which last Friday announced an $8 million commitment to add more RCMP officer and civilian positions for rural Alberta.

"I don't foresee an increase to establishments here or our detachment, but I predict there will be an increase to our crime reduction units," stated Charles. "They're centralised through districts and they'll be available to us for special projects and to assist in our rural crime reduction."

They only started up last fall and they're already making a difference.
