Your Drumheller Dragons wrapped up the 2025 portion of their schedule this past weekend with two games. Friday night, they hosted the Ft. McMurray Oil Barons and were looking to bounce back after a loss on Tuesday to the Grande Prairie Storm.
The Dragons would have their chances in the first period but Fort McMurray would open the scoring at 12:15 when Leo Adams would score. Then, only 48 seconds later, Justin Dumais of the Oil Barons would increase their lead to 2-0. Also in the first period, there would be a fight between Dragons captain Nick McLennan and Oil Baron Dustin Good.
The second period would be back and forth between the two teams would be unable to find the back of the net. There would be the second fight of the game as Dragon Wyatt Yule would square up against Cole Brown.
In the third, the Dragons came out inspired and would begin the comeback. At 1:42, Bradley Gallo would score his 18th of the year, from Jase Johnstone, to cut the deficit to 2-1. The comeback would be complete with 3:48 remaining in the game, as Jackson DeGraves scored his 7th of the year, from Luca Dufour and Noa Halat.
In overtime, the Dragons would get the win on a nice goal by Jacob Goudreau, assisted by Tristan Payne, giving the Dragons the 3-2 victory.
Saturday, the Dragons would play their final game in 2025 in Canmore. It would be a battle for third place as the Eagles were two points back of the Dragons, heading into the game. The Dragons would come out flying in the first, opening the scoring on the power play at 9:33 when Jase Johnstone scored his 2nd of the year, from Tristan Payne and Bradley Gallo. The Eagles would tie the game only 37 seconds later when Easton Milne scored. Then, on the power play, Canmore’s Hudson Landmark would score to give the Eagles the 2-1 lead. Only 26 seconds later, the Eagles would increase their lead with a goal by Reid Larson. The Dragons would out-shoot the Eagles 14-4 but would trail 3-1 after one period.
Early in the second, Canmore would increase their lead with Cohen Daoust scoring his 18th of the year, and his third point of the game, making it 4-1. Bradley Gallo would try to spark his team by dropping the gloves with Tavynn Hamilton. It would be an even fight but would be the end of the game of the top scorer of the Dragons, with Gallo’s game misconduct from the fight. The second would end with the Eagles leading 4-1.
The Dragons would try to crawl their way back in the game in the third and would get one late in the period. Tristan Payne scored his 3rd of the year, from Lauchlan Kozicky, cutting the deficit to 4-2 Canmore. Drumheller would pull goaltender Brandon Williams with just over two minutes left in the game but were unable to score. Canmore would seal the deal with an empty net goal with 39 seconds remaining, with a goal by Will Lutic.
The Dragons and Eagles are now tied for third place, with the Eagles having three games in hand. The Dragons will start 2026 on the road on January 3rd when they head to Drayton Valley. Then on Sunday, December 4th, they will be in Olds to face the Grizzlys.
