This past weekend saw our Dragons face their rivals from Olds with the Grizzlys coming to the Memorial Arena for two games.
Friday night would start off strong for the Dragons outshooting the Grizzlys by a 19-8 margin but the Grizzlys would be the ones to hit the scoreboard early. Sean Richards would score for Olds at 8:27 and then would add another at 10:10 for the 2-0 lead. Drumheller’s Matthew Hilderman would answer with his 9th of the year, from Sullivan Humeniuk and Luca Dufour at 11:54, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Dragons would again outshoot the Grizzlys in the second and score the only goal of the period at 10:39 with Jacob Goudreau scoring his 7th of the season, from Bradley Gallo and Rowan McDonald. The game would be tied 2-2 heading to the third period.
Olds would score three in the third, Ryland Molde at 8:21, Calder Hutt at 11:35, and then with 10 seconds left in the game, Calum Giese scored his first of the year. The Grizzlys would go on to the 5-2 victory.
Sunday, the Dragons were looking for some payback. Drumheller would get on the board first in the first period with Jacob Goudreau scoring his second goal in two games (8) from Jensen Marsh and Jase Johnstone on the powerplay at 11:55. The Dragons would take the 1-0 lead into the second period.
Drumheller would add to their lead early as Luca Dufour scored his 3rd of the year from Sullivan Humeniuk and Tristan Payne at 2:18. Just over three minutes later, Bradley Gallo would add to the Dragons lead with his 20th of the year, from Jensen Marsh and Nathan Ivey, making it 3-0 Dragons.
Early in the third period, Sean Cootes shut-out bid would end as Ky Martens from the Grizzlys would score at 1:39, cutting the Dragons lead to 3-1. Drumheller would increase the lead once again at 3:44 as Bradley Gallo (21) scored his second of the game, and stretched his point streak to 15 games, assisted by Sullivan Humeniuk and Jase Johnstone. Then, a strange one for the Dragons, as Olds had their net empty for an extra attacker with over seven minutes left in the game. Nathan Ivey was streaking in, got taken down at the side of the net. The puck stayed outside of the goal but since he was taken down in the act of shooting, the referees determined that he would get the goal (5). The Grizzlys would get a powerplay goal with 1:48 left in the game with Sean Richards scoring his third goal in two games, making the final 5-2 Drumheller. With the win, Sean Cootes recorded his 40th win as a Dragon (thanks to Ron Bell for the information), joining Johnny Hogue, Jonathan LaRose, and Hunter Virostek.
The Dragons have the week to prepare for two against the Bonnyville Pontiacs this weekend, both at the Memorial Arena. Friday night is “Kids Night” where kids get in for free. Both games on Friday and Saturday start at 7 PM.
