This past weekend, the Verdant Valley Community Centre was busy with a large group of girls from around the region.
Girl Guides from all over the area descended on the Drumheller area for a provincial camp. Noella Brisebois from the Badlands Prairie Rose Girl Guides unit provides all the details of the event. “We had our Provincial Rally this weekend. We had 118 girls from Standard, Hanna, Drumheller, Okotoks, and Langdon attend. There were 39 Guiders (leaders) that also came along with them. We spent the day doing different stations. We mixed the girls up so they could get to know the other girls and become friends with them.”
The Girl Guides hold these camps quite often and Brisebois notes that with the region being so large, it’s great to be able to bring these girls together year after year. “Our district of Badlands runs from Castor to Okotoks, from Stettler to Vulcan. It is girls from our area that will come and attend these big events. It is so amazing when you go to (the events) and see the same girls year after year.”
At the event, a special presentation was given to Brisebois. “I was presented with the Honourary Life Membership Pin, which you only get after being in Guiding for over 30 years. They started this process back in September, which I knew nothing about, obviously. It is just a great honour to get this award but I don’t do it for that. I do it because I want the girls to have fun and get to believe in themselves and get the confidence to go out in the world and do different things.”
Some other exciting news for the Badlands unit is the new group of Girl Guides in Castor. “We just got confirmation of them coming under us on Monday, last week. They apparently have one leader, a couple of unit assistants, and probably about six girls wanting to join already.”
They are always looking for more girls and leaders. If you are interested in being part of Girl Guides, visit their website for more information.
