For a number of years, there have been only a couple of charging stations for electric vehicles in the Drumheller Valley.
Two of the stations were owned and operated by the Town of Drumheller but both of those are planned to be shut down, one at the Badlands Community Facility already has. The Town of Drumheller had always wanted Tesla to install some charging stations in the valley but the company did not have any interest, at the time. That has now changed.
In a presentation to Drumheller Town Council on Tuesday, June 16th, Town of Drumheller Administration shared that the Town now has an opportunity to partner with Tesla to install eight V4 Superchargers capable of serving both Tesla vehicles and other electric vehicles with the appropriate adapter. Administration presented Town Council three different possible locations of the superchargers. First would be the parking lot at the corner of Riverside Drive and 2nd Street West (Highway 9). Second option would be the west side of the Badlands Community Facility parking lot. Third option is the northwest corner of the parking lot to the west of Shoppers Drug Mart, on the north side of Railway Avenue. Tesla would spend the funds to install the charging stations and revamp the parking lot for the stations.
Through the discussion at the meeting, a couple of the Town Councillors stated that option two, in the BCF parking lot, would be adjacent to the Cenotaph and didn’t feel that would be an appropriate spot. There was also some concern about lost revenue from the pay parking program and how it may affect the vendors who set up in the parking lot across from the fountain.
Drumheller Town Council did approve the Request For Decision for Town Administration to continue working with Tesla on the development of charging stations in the valley. The first option would be the parking lot at the corner of Riverside Drive and 2nd Street West, with the second option being the parking lot to the west of Shoppers Drug Mart.
