Some exciting news for a young local hockey player as he has signed a letter of intent to further his hockey career.
Tyson Chambers, who was a volunteer DJ at Drumheller Dragons games a few years ago, has continued to work on his game on the ice and has been offered an opportunity to play with the Oceanside Generals of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. According to Chambers, this chance came up due to his play last year and through a number of camps. “I was at a camp in Camrose and I had my Dad and (Rick) Hannibal messaging on Elite Prospects. A couple of coaches were trying to get a hold of me and sure enough my coach shot me a message that they were going to be at a showcase I was attending. They really liked my style of play.”
Chambers is truly looking forward to being able to move forward in hockey. “I think it’s awesome. I think it is a great opportunity and I’m looking forward to a brand new experience, meeting all new people, hopefully making my way to the AJHL or SJHL one day, maybe wearing that Dragons crest one day.”
Of course, Tyson’s parents are excited for him but understand that it will be different with him being so far away from Drumheller. “Mom is going to be pretty upset when I leave but she is really excited for me, so is my Dad. My Dad said ‘go giv’er’ and is not too worried about it. My Mom’s probably going to have the hardest time but they are both so happy for me. The want to come out and see the island too, and enjoy it with me.”
It will be a bit of an adjustment and Chambers will not miss the cold, maybe the snow. “Absolutely not going to miss minus 30. I will say that I will miss the snow because I don’t mind the snow. I am bringing my golf clubs as I am going to try to get a job at a golf course, while I’m there.”
Chambers prepares to join the Generals, who are in a Junior A Tier 2 league with eleven teams all on Vancouver Island. The Generals are in Parksville, BC and play out of Oceanside Place. The team has been around since 1990 and have won the league championship three times in their history.
