This past weekend turned out pretty well for those involved with the 37th Annual Rumsey Ride For STARS. It all started with a fundraising walk on Saturday evening with the majority of the events, including the ride, taking place on Sunday.
When we were able to stop in and visit on Sunday morning, one of the organizers, Rob Richmond, shared that it was a great start to the event. “We’re off to a flying start, sun is shining, pancakes are flipped. We’ve got tons of riders heading out and the day is going.”
As part of the event, over the past seven years, Richmond and his wife have integrated a 5K walk into the event, Angie & Rob’s Walk 7 for 37. Richmond was very happy with the participation in the walk again for 2026. “We had lots of fun. We had eight or ten people go out and walk led by the ‘queens of the 5K’, my Mom Eleanor Richmond and Carol Kashuba of Rumsey.”
It is not and has never been lost on Richmond and all of the organizers on how Rumsey and the surrounding area comes together to put on this event. “Rumsey is always big, the whole area is always big at supporting us. The Rumsey Ride For STARS is such a big tradition. STARS is such a vital part of the community and the surrounding area, as it is such a great service.”
Richmond is so thankful for their group of organizers who step up to put this event together, with some help from the community of course. “Everybody works. We’ve got a great small team. We’ve got Mary Newton, whose been on (the board) since ’93. My Mom, Eleanor Richmond has been on it for a ton of years. We’ve got the Rumsey Fire Department, the Rumsey AG Society, everybody kind of just pitches in. We push the ‘Go’ button and away we go.” Richmond also notes that they could always use more volunteers to help out with the event. “It’s a small commitment but it lots of fun. You never know when you are going to need that little red helicopter.”
They had a large silent auction once again this year, a number of great raffles, breakfast by the Rumsey Fire Department, and the big dinner to wrap things up. Calculations are underway from this year’s ride. Richmond estimates that over the past 36 years, the event has raised over $1.2 Million for STARS.
