If you have been on social media you may have noticed that there is a new hockey venture coming to the area, the Badlands Wolves FunTeam Hockey organization.
The new organization will be based out of the Morrin Arena. Tania Johnson is one of the organizers and explains more about the program. “The Badlands Wolves FunTeam Hockey program is a community hockey program focused on providing additional playing opportunities for young players. We’re committed to keeping the game accessible, affordable, and inclusive while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, skill development, and the belief that fun comes first. We welcome players of all skill levels and want to create an environment where every player feels welcome and has the opportunity to grow both on and off the ice.”
Many may wonder if there is a need for another hockey program in the area. Johnson and all involved in the Badlands Wolves believes there is. “The Badlands Wolves FunTeam Hockey program was started because we saw a way to build on the great hockey experiences already available in our community. We wanted to create another option for local families where kids can develop their skills, build confidence, make lasting friendships, and have fun. The response from families has been incredibly positive, and we’re excited about what we’re building together here in the Badlands.”
As many may not know, the FunTeam hockey program is somewhat different that what is offered through minor hockey. “What makes the Badlands Wolves different is that we focus on more than just the scoreboard,” comments Johnson. “We want kids to develop their skills, build confidence, make friends, and have fun. We’re fortunate to have a great group of coaches who share those values and are committed to creating a positive experience for every player. Success for us is seeing players grow both on and off the ice and creating an environment that families want to be part of.”
So far the response by potential players has been quite positive admits Johnson. “We’ve only recently launched publicly, but the initial response has been very encouraging. Families are reaching out to learn more, and there’s a real sense of excitement around bringing another youth hockey option to the area. In fact, one of our age divisions has already filled, which really speaks to the excitement and interest we’ve seen from local families. We’re looking forward to welcoming players to the Morrin rink and building on that momentum as we head toward the season.”
As of right now they are building the program but it looks like they hope to have two teams at different age levels, one from 8 to 12 years old, and the other for 12 and over. There is room in both and there may be another team for under 8 if they get enough interest. Practices will be on Sundays at the Morrin Arena starting once the ice goes in come October, and games will be on Saturdays.
There is an opportunity for families to get involved according to Johnson. “We’re excited to connect with families who are interested in learning more about the Badlands Wolves. We’re also looking for volunteers, sponsors, and community supporters who share our passion for youth sports. Anyone interested can visit our FunTeam Alberta registration page or follow us on Facebook for updates. We’re excited for the season ahead and grateful for the support we’ve received so far. We invite families to come skate with the pack!”
