Our Drumheller Dragons had a rare midweek home game on Wednesday night (September 9th) as the Camrose Kodiaks came to town for some AJHL exhibition action.
These two teams met in the AJHL Playoffs back in March and most were wondering if that rivalry would play into this exhibition match-up. Drumheller came out wanting to make a statement and got on the board early with a goal by Rowan McDonald at 3:09 of the first period. The Dragons would add to their lead as veteran forward Wyatt Yule would score, with 9:16 left in the first period, making it 2-0 Drumheller. Less than a minute later, another one of the Dragons veteran forwards, Lauchlan Kozicky, scored his third of the pre-season, giving the Dragons the 3-0 lead after one period.
Camrose would get on the board very early in the second period when Miles Copeland scored at 1:46, cutting the Dragons lead to 3-1. Drumheller would answer back with Rowan McDonald scoring his second of the game at 6:56, making it 4-1 Dragons. Just over two minutes later, Drumheller forward Dominic Seminoff would tally his fourth of the pre-season, increasing the lead to 5-1. Drumheller would continue to dominate the score sheet with Wyatt Yule scoring his second of the game with 5:53 left in the period. Only 32 seconds later, Lauchlan Kozicky would score his second of the game (4th of the pre-season), making it 7-1 Dragons. With just over two minutes left in the period, Camrose would score their second of the game, off the stick of Aidan Sexsmith, short-handed. On the same penalty, Drumheller would increase their lead to 8-1 on a goal by Luca Dufour, with 1:36 left in the period.
Only one goal scored in the third, by the Kodiaks, when Connor Frost scored on the powerplay at 2:21.
The Dragons would take the win 8-3. They hit the road on Friday night in Calgary to face the Canucks and will wrap up the pre-season at home on Saturday night against Korea University. Game time Saturday night at the Memorial Arena is at 7 PM.
