Last month, a presentation was made at the Drumheller Town Council Committee Of The Whole meeting in regards to the recreation priorities for the community by the Drumheller Valley Sports Committee.
The committee shared with council their recommendations on the needs of recreation in our community. Some were surprised that a new swimming pool was not high on that list. A group of concerned citizens feel that a new pool is important, so much so that they are planning to present to Drumheller Town Council at the regular council meeting on Tuesday, October 20th. Amanda Mageto from the group shares why they believe the swimming pool to be so important for our community. “The Drumheller Aquaplex is more than just a swimming pool, it’s an important part of our community where children can learn life saving skills, families spend time together, seniors stay active, and people of all ages get to benefit from recreation.”
Brenda DeBona from the group notes that the current pool does not allow for expansion of offerings to those that may be interested. “Right now, we have a very active swim club, which is a competitive swim club. If we built a new facility and we looked at different ways we could bring more swimmers into the pool, you could have a diving club and you could have a synchronized swim club, for example.”
The group understands the importance of the potential second sheet of ice for our community and would love to see that as well, notes Mageto. “This is not about politics. It’s about community collaboration ensuring that Drumheller continues to be a wonderful to live, raise families, and stay active.”
DeBona and the group are hopeful by presenting to Town Council on Tuesday, they can reiterate the importance of a new pool for the community. “The Recreation Plan that was given to the Town in June of 2023, did say that the pool needed immediate replacement, and that a second sheet of ice would be next on the list. Our goal, what we think is best for the community, is to keep the Aquaplex as the number one priority, then a second sheet of ice.
The group is hopeful that Drumheller Town Council will take their presentation, and the future of the Aquaplex into consideration as the Town prepares for budget deliberations. The hope is that the Town will do a feasibility study on the construction of a new indoor pool facility.
