Early this morning (Friday) we started to see rain showers in the Drumheller Valley but by about 8 AM, the rain had switched to snow, resulting in our first snowfall of the fall of 2026.
Weather forecasters had been predicting that we would see some significant weather changes at the end of the week and that is what came to fruition. According to Stingray Weather Specialist Brandon Houck, the weather system came in like expected. “A big low pressure system that moved in out of Montana, with a sharp cold front moving in out of BC, those two systems interacting and causing all kinds of headaches. Lots of snow, lots of rain, depending on where you are with the precipitation that is moving its way through. Strong winds as well. Winds gusting in the southern portion of the province gusting as high as 80 to 90 km/h today.”
As for what is expected throughout the Drumheller area, Houck expects for us to see a rain snow mix. “The Drumheller area will probably pick up 2 – 4 centimeters of snow. We will easily see the temperature fall to the freezing mark. Not as strong of winds as other regions of Alberta, seeing up to 60 km/h today. We even had some thunder and lightning in the Drumheller area this morning, with convective activity.”
As we have Halloween only a week ahead, Houck believes that we should see a small warm up next week. “We are going to see a little bit of a rebound, closer to average temperatures next week. There is a bit of a rebound as we may pop to double digits as we get to Halloween.”
