Our Drumheller Dragons hit the road for two games up in Drayton Valley this weekend. Going into the weekend, the Thunder were in first place in the division, and the Dragons were hoping they could take all four points on the weekend.
Saturday night would end up being a very entertaining game with good goaltending on both sides. The Dragons would end up opening up the scoring early in the first period with Grayson Boe scoring his fourth of the year at 2:27, assisted by Nicholas Binner and Kutcher Aquila. Drayton Valley would tie it up with 8:01 left in the first, with a powerplay goal by Avery Watson.
The Dragons would have their chances in the second but could not solve goaltender Kellen Salter. The only goal of the period would be by Daniel Zhou of the Thunder, giving Drayton Valley the 2-1 lead.
Early in the third period, Drayton Valley would increase their lead with Ethan Hunter scoring at 3:59. Drumheller would try to even things up by pulling goaltender Brandon Williams but to no avail as Colson Ganser would score into the empty net with eight seconds remaining to make the final 4-1 Thunder.
Sunday, the Dragons looked for redemption but would be down early in the game. The deadly Drayton Valley powerplay would capitalize again as Lachlan Staniforth scored his first of the year with 1:43 left in the first period, making it 1-0 Thunder.
Early in the second, Drayton Valley would add to their lead with Avery Watson scoring at 2:17. Cue the comeback for our Dragons as, on the powerplay, Lauchlan Kozicky tallied his sixth of the season, from Luca Dufour and Jacob Goudreau at 6:05. With 6:19 remaining in the second period, Drumheller would draw even with Lauchlan Kozicky tying the game 2-2 with his second of the game, assisted by Dominic Seminoff and Colter Playfair.
In the third, Drayton Valley would regain the lead with 6:49 left in the game, on a goal by Daniel Zhou. With 2:10 remaining, The Dragons would tie the game 3-3, on Jacob Goudreau’s fifth of the year, from Colter Playfair and Lauchlan Kozicky. The game would remain tied through the end of the third, and overtime, needing a shoot-out to determine a winner.
What a shoot-out it would be. Drayton Valley would shoot first and Brandon Williams would stop Daniel Zhou. On the Dragons first attempt, Bradley Gallo would score. Taynton Lavender would score for the Thunder to even things up in the shoot-out. It would take until round 9 of the shoot-out to determine a winner. Dragons rookie defensemen Paxton Cabana would score the game winning goal, giving the Dragons the 4-3 shoot-out victory, the second shoot-out victory for the Dragons this season.
Drumheller has the week to prepare for two home games this upcoming weekend. Friday night, the Dragons will host the Devon Xtreme at 7 PM. Then Saturday, Drumheller hosts the Whitecourt Wolverines for a Halloween affair. Game time on Saturday is also at 7 PM.
