As we grow up, making the choice on what you hope to do as a career out of school is a difficult choice.
Fortunately for a number of junior high and high school students from around the Drumheller and Hanna areas, an event held this past week helps to provide opportunities for them to learn on what different options are available to them. Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta hosted their World of Choices event for over 200 students. There were 37 different businesses and careers at tables where the students were able to chat with people in the industry and learn more about it. Melanie Hardy, Programs Coordinator with Junior Achievement Southern Alberta confirms the importance of having this opportunity for the students. “To be exposed to different kinds of industries is huge. I like the story of maybe not having just one career for their lifetime. Everything isn’t a cookie-cutter world, paths come up. It is really important to expose them to a number of different options.”
Junior Achievement have a multitude of programming to help students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 admits Hardy. “We have financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness programs from Kindergarten to Grade 12 now.”
The feedback Junior Achievement receives from those that attend is quite positive shares Hardy. “Usually quite positive. I had a student last year that said ‘I thought I wanted to do this but after this event, he had completely changed his mind’. Learning about different industries and the key take aways they get from these mentors.”
Junior Achievement is a non-profit group that can always use more support.
