UPDATE: On Wednesday, November 4th, demolition crews began the work to take down the building and by early in the afternoon, the former building was no more.
Crews were continuing clean up work on Thursday morning, removing the rubble from the demolition of the building. The sidewalk in front of the former retail store is closed for safety reasons. The removal of the building has changed the look along 3rd Avenue for certain. The hope is that someone will build a new building on the location but no plans are in the works as far as we know.

A building along 3rd Avenue West in the Downtown Drumheller Core is anticipated to be coming down in the near future.
The two story building is located at 30 3rd Avenue West and has been vacant for a number of years. At one time, a photography store along with a music store was located in the business. It was also used in filming of television and movie projects in years past.

A building that has stood along 3rd Avenue West for over 100 years will soon be a thing of the past as it is scheduled to be demolished by the end of November.
During the past Committee of the Whole Meeting for the Town of Drumheller, on October 13th, Director of Emergency and Protective Services, Greg Peters, shared with council that the Town of Drumheller obtained an order from the Court of King’s Bench declaring the building unsafe and unfit for occupation by a licensed professional engineer. The Town tried numerous times to work with the building owner but the major structural remediation work did not occur.
In a release on the Town of Drumheller’s website, residents and visitors should expect:
- Increased construction and contractor activity in the area
- Large demolition equipment and vehicles
- Increased noise and dust
- Temporary sidewalk and pedestrian route changes
- Temporary parking restrictions
- Closures of the rear alley
- Temporary fencing, barriers and disposal containers around the work area
The building has been part of Drumheller’s framework since early on with the two story building being constructed back in 1912. The work has begun to safely bring down the structure with minimal impacts to nearby businesses and properties. The Town advises that businesses adjacent to the building will remain open throughout the demolition period. The hope is to have the building removed by the end of November.
